Pundits, I write about you

"No matter how hard they try, there's no escaping their identity. The merit list displayed on the notice board announces it. This rank is their introduction to upper-caste seniors, during friendly ragging sessions, which could later become an outlet for the frustration of general category students. Like the final-year AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) student, who made a reserved category fresher sit on the ground while a brahmin fresher sat on a chair, next to him. The senior asked him to say, "I am from a lower caste," repeatedly, to show him his place in the premises, where he had gained an "easy" entry this year. Hostels then become ghettoes. In AIIMS, quota students chiefly occupy the top two floors of the hostel. An engraved message on the door of one quota student on another floor asked him to "get out of this wing". Final-year student Ajay Kumar Singh still recalls the day he shifted from room number 43, which had leakage problems, to number 45. The whole wing was otherwise occupied by general category students, who promptly put up a board on top of the common carrom board, "Everyone except occupant of room number 45 can play." A reserved category student, who managed to become the gym secretary of AIIMS, resigned from his post as the financial secretary (a general category student) refused to release him funds. "He was chased around and beaten up by the executive heads of the student council," says Sunil Chumber, sub-dean of AIIMS. It is believed that several professors are on the side of the anti-reservation battalion. That's why during the recent agitation, some pro-reservation students hid their faces behind their placards, so that their professors wouldn't spot them. Once their pro-reservation rally was even mistaken by newspapers as an anti-reservation demonstration. Dalit students survive through a hard skin formed after a whole life replete with insults." Times.

Also at AIIMS : "The second student, who resides in Hostel 2, apparently incurred the wrath of his seniors for coming to the rescue of his friend on several occasions. "I have been subjected to mental and physical torture from my very first day in this institute...I was abused on my caste and...in the last few days my room had been locked from outside because of which I was unable to attend classes," his complaint reads. Both students are from the reserved category. Their complaints were submitted on Friday, along with a memorandum signed by 40 students recounting several cases of caste-based abuse in recent times — including the instances of a seventh-semester student "who...was forced to shift after abuses were written on his door." "

A pundit on Desipundit implies in a snide comment here that I write about 'sanskriti and parampara'. I think I write about institutions, formal and informal,..that block/censor/kill anything that questions our 'sanskriti and parampara'. Like Desipundit... which has certified, more than once, that the students (whose sankriti and parampara the newsreport describes), fighting for 'equality' are non-political, non-violent.

A lot of it is true. As a dalit who had faced discrimination I can attest these things happen- However one thing which people like you / media etc never tell is that a lot of times the oppressors are OBCs. and most of the violent reactions which we faced are also from OBCs. We face verbal abuse from upper caste but violent abuse we face it only from OBCs. You talk greatly about representation but can you ask your OBCs to allow election in pappapati and keeripati in tamilnadu. Don't try to shed crocodile tears for dalits. We have problems with upper caste but we will settle it out ourself. Don't include dalit stories in your argument and try to get sympathy. Of course you won't allow this comment-still i will put it. It is like what our columnist chandrabhan prasad writes- The system was craeted by brahmins but today we suffer most from OBCs.

read the articles again - are the students responsible obcs? don't pretend to be what you're not. i'll include every kind of story and don't expect sympathy from frauds like you..

>>mineguruji , if u can't answer don't say i'm a chauvanist or a fraud. That's a typical response of a bigot- after all as chandrabhan says u r not interested in eradicating caste only changing who is at the top -

>> obcvoice, i nevr said about this incident but of my experience and other general stuff.

I wonder why you did not respond about pappapati and keeripatti. Is it because it is not convinient for you? Or shall I list more violent incidents from Tamil nadu?

anonymous,

i wonder why you haven't responded to the incidents at AIIMS which is what this post is about...or about Desipundit which has been encouraging a vicious campaign against reservations and against OBCs and Dalits?

I can provide you with more incidents than you can about Dalits and OBCs..I've never denied them ..But you seem to be blissfully ignorant of the fact that the Upper castes in India, which includes you, are trying to build a totally untruthful campaign that it is not the they who are the major offenders all over the country. You like the Upper Castes..you admire them..? Go ahead. You've every right to like your own kind.

OBC Voice,
Can a case not be rgistered against these bigots at AIIMS? Especially when it is out in the news and all? Or is it just too much to expect from our police?

What's happenning at aiims is indeed shameful. The dalit students must immediately lodge an fir. Any physical or mental discrimination against a dalit/tribal is a non-bailable offence under the POASCST act.
But how is it related to reservations for OBCs?

@mineguruji
Its shameful. Anyone who talks about oppression on dalits by OBCs comes across as an upper-caste bigot to you. You sound like a OBC minister's son (you cannot be a woman. Women are much more sensitive and intelligent).

@obcvoice
You are still to give me any reasons to believe that upper OBCs do not oppress the dalits. Iam waiting for details of your intelligent research.

@obcvoice
Can you please give me details about the students. I can help them in lodging a formal complaint. This is not a trivial matter, just to be left in pages of media and/or in blgo posts.

anoop saha,

could you please elaborate on what you're talking about/ if you're referring to our exchange on shivam vij's blog..i'd posted my response there long ago..

and about this post..did i say this post was related to obc reservations? did i say any of my posts are related to obc reservations..read carefully ...my concerns are only that the obcs and low castes should get their due share of opportunities everywhere.. i don't care if it's done through reservations or any other means.. i want it done now, not later after careful so-called 'deliberation' and 'finetuning' etc, which are just another excuse for stalling the process or killing it altogether..

and yes..please read my response on shivam's blog before you respond again.

polite indian,

please read shivam's latest post (books are not for burning..)on the aiims issue.. i believe the students were coerced by the adminstration to withdraw their complaint against the erring students..now that the mainstream has decided to write about it, i hope the courts/human rights commission etc take up this issue.. let's wait.

Apologies for the personal comment. However, you cannot just go on calling everybody who talks about oppression as an 'upper caste bigot'.

@obcvoice
Thanks for the reminder. I have checked your response on Shivam's blog. I will post my reponse there.

"..my concerns are only that the obcs and low castes should get their due share of opportunities everywhere"

I presume that you agree with me that all OBC's don't deserve the benefit of reservations. Please modify your comment to "..my concerns are only that the" LOWER "obcs and low castes should get their due share of opportunities everywhere"
(or mbcs and low castes should get their due)

@shivam
Well, in that case, its really sad.

you presume a lot..and dictate a lot more. and another thing i've noticed from your comments here and elsewhere that you don't really know who the OBCs are...

The OBCs, Mr. Saha, despite the higher economic status of some of them, are seriously underrepresented in govt jobs and in higher education.. and the upper castes have been seriously overrepresented in those opportunities for a very long period.. I said the OBCs should get their due share - which means everyone..economics etc., can only be secondary criteria..

i am not going to modify my statement until it's proven at the national level, i repeat, at the national level that there is tangible evidence that certain OBCs don't deserve reservations.. Right now, i consider it premature to speculate on that .. because there has been no reservations in higher education at all at the national level for the OBCs.

This post plainly is a premonition of the future of reservations...could you not sense the frustration of the 'pundit' student while he did this task?? or is it that you are trying to insinuate that 'pundits' possess evil minds?
This 'pundit' must have also been an innocent student years back,oblivious of the facts about casteism and the like.have you ever thought from exactly where did this venom of hatred made him do this disghusting act??
Anyway...why would you?You have politics to play here.

again,how would you...you are against brahimins, nothing so "altruistic" about this obcs ka masiha out here !

trust me people..i have tried it ;-)

even after so many years of domination and suppression, the upper caste people are not willing to share power and privileges with the lowcaste people of India.
The caste system was started by them to perpetuate their hegemony but the time of realization has come, either they will have to adopt the formula of live and let live or they would be forced to do so, and in that case they might not like the end result.

let's see - he got it because of reservastions, right? let's take the lesson we have learnt here and apply it to understand what the dalit students, many dalits before him must be feeling, must have felt now..and for ages. why don't they exhibit any venom, rhea?

i guess it's because they've still retained their humanity..and the pundit, and people who endorse his acts like you..what are you?

No.They may just become 'superhumans'.

About the rest of it, well if analysing and giving the reasons for somebody's certain kind of behaviour is regarded equivalent to endorsing their act and bearing sympathy for them... *sigh* so be it...
Its insanity to expect healthy discussion from you.

P.S : Are you sure all Dalits being humans have really retained their humanity ?
How do you "interpret" humanity, anyway?Is it 'quietly' snatching away the right of some other person, then 'quietly' watch that person scream in frustration out on the streets, later quietly laughing at his helplessness and when he takes out his frustration on you, just sitting and 'bearing' it all quietly...how human.

It is true that there is violence against dalits by OBCs. But, when we look at the caste system, we need to understand it as a structure of oppression. So, don't just fight your immediate oppressors but fight the system and see the oppressor her/himself caught within it. If we view it like this, I am sure we can include all people fighting against the caste system in our fight for justice. Also, why should OBC voice who is pro-dalit be made to answer for the horrible things perpetrated by any one else? Why should he be made to represent "all" (including, violent and anti-dalit) OBCs? that is very strange...

WHEN IT COMES TO RESERVATIONS PMK, DMK AND AIADMK PREFER HINDI OVER TAMIL

Pro reservationationists ironically favour Muslims who only speak Hindi at home or Nayudus and Reddys who speak only Telugu at home. At the same time they treat Tamil-speaking Brahmins and Chettiars as foreign invaders by excluding them . They also claim to fight for the Tamil cause….by dividing Tamil society!!? PMK, DMK, ADMK etc reject creamy layer, support the cruel 2-tumbler system of Southern Tamil Nadu and now demand extended reservation. PMK leader will go Delhi, Hyderabad and Bombay to promote reservation rather than setting up Tamil learning centers in those places. This shows that Tamil Nadu policitians don’t mind loosing their self respect and prefer to worship their Hindi masters than to work for an integrated Tamil society. Incidently the PMK health minister has made Hindi compulsory for medicine, the the DMK surface transport minister has made Hindi compulsory on national roads even in Tamil Nadu.
