Is caste a barrier to professional success?

Asks IBN-Live, and wants you to sms your answers. This announcement was preceded by the mandatory round-up of 'anti-reservations' protests across the country (the newsperson never fails to emphasize that) and a story on an OBC kid from Bihar who made it to IIT Kharagpur without the'crutches' (the newsperson can't stop herself from saying what she thinks of ..*&@ reservations) of reservations. The routine is repeated, more or less, across the channels with subtle and not-so-subtle insertion of hints that the Mandal recommendations are still up for questioning, meaning its very basis, recommendations and methods should be questioned (as if they haven't been questioned earlier) and directions (do it-that's the media's appeal to the anti-reservationists)...interspersed with wise heads like Dipankar Gupta and others almost saying that caste is an irrelevant issue and Mandal was flawed etc.,.. And a commenter on one of my posts, couched in much abuse and...asks me why do I consider 'anti-reservations protests' a nautanki ?
Recalcitrant OBCs and Dalits are routinely subjected to much more than lathis and water cannons in this country. Students from the lower castes have to routinely stage rallies, after having begged and pleaded with their school/college authorities and babus in social welfare departments in most states, to appeal to their state governments to release their 'merit-cum-means scholarships'. They are never allowed anywhere near the mantralaya/secretariat.. forget the minister's house or the Mukhya Mantri Nivas or the Governor's Bungalow..(they wouldn't even dare to think of going anywhere near those places). If you ever happen to witness any of these rallies, feast your curiosity on the sight of hundreds of scrawny, shabbily dressed kids scrambling for cover from the lathis, racing and diving and occasionally darting back to pick up their ..chappals. Watch them scale walls and skirt and avoid the lathis with such ease. You'd think it was a game for them. Except that, running through the minds of many of them is this choice : drought and starvation back home and free food in the hostel and education.. . Their names are routinely struck off the rolls of their colleges for not having paid their fees, thrown out of their hostels.. I think of all those clever people calculating how many OBC kids could get school education if the subsidy that would go to supporting an OBC student's education at an IIT/IIM were diverted to the schoolkids' cause. No, you wouldn't get any figures on how many upper caste kids' subsidised education at the IIT/IIMs or dozens of other fancy institutions, since the day they were started, could have supported how many OBC?Dalit kids' education. And those sensible people who suggest, so helpfully (why doesn't anyone ever think of these simple answers!), 'give them good schooling ..first' , they wouldn't know ,of course, just how whimsically state governments can scale down budgets for 'welfare' students. Scholarships for two lakh students last year.. scholarships for one lakh seventy five thousand this year..You are not supposed to ask: there hasn't been a fall in admissions, in fact there has been an increase.. then why this scaling down? None of the sensible people actually ask this question , routinely or otherwise. It's only when the Mandal issue, every fifteen years or so, crops up do they actually bother.
So when the elite says it's protesting, are we to understand that its appointees in the government aren't actually working overtime finding out ways and means to get over this..infernal mandal thing? That Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi and Advani and Yechuri and .. aren't as exercised over the issue as that loudmouth Sibal?

'u knw wat guys...dis guy loves calling himself dalit/obc/sc/st....when the entire nation is ready 2 accept him as an indian.....'
the question is: do i crave for your acceptance? hell, we're walking all over you guys(like the original obc hanuman in lanka) and you don't even have sense enough to realize that your lanka is burning.

i am an OBC, and i dont need these cruthes of reservation for me to carve out my future. Dont u have any dignity, whatsoever. Moreover, if a candidate who's through 15/16 years of education, still cant get through with him merit alone, is he worth the seat?.
reservations is a sham, and proved the same. it helps only the well-to-do lower caste ppl. the true poor, who has received so bad an education (TOI: kids in municipalty and rural schools, in 7th 8th std, cant even write their name).. these kids, though my sympathy lies with thier plight: would it help them to become professionals. and would u trust them to operate on u.
This kind of schemes devaluates the education itself.

'hanuman-obc??? GREAT keep on going(and he was in Rams' army without reservations)'
see? there are a lot of things you aren't aware of..and you don't even read any stuff that throws new knowledge at you - like it was the obcs and and the dalits who weren't getting their rightful share of jobs(even in the government) in the country until now- that the government was distributing cushy jobs, right left and centre, to the upper castes in the public sector apart from the government itself.. you don't care at all about the lakhs of jobs, that went exclusively to the upper castes, that the obcs were never given a chance to compete for.. and you want us to grieve for you when you lose a few seats (not to forget the fact that the central government is right now trying so very hard that you don't)?
manee,
i belong to this country only if i support your cause? thanks but no thanks.

ajinkya,
i don't care if you are a martian..and as far as i am concerned you are a martian. because what you submitting as proof is basically your unsubstantiated judgment..like an outsider who has no knowledge of what's happening/happened on planet india.
if there had been any real effort made for justice in this country until now the poor kids you referred to wouldn't be suffering from 'their plight'. as i'm right now on a mythology trip..let me tell you that we don't need your shalya sarathya.. and definitely not your sympathy..or anybody's.
ajinkya and everyone,
if anybody is under the illusion that we are asking for their sympathy i ask you to cure yourself of this malaise, right now. we aren't asking for your permission or acceptance- we are taking what's rightfully ours. and we have only depended on our own perseverance, especially since 1990, to see this thing through all the stalling and dilatory efforts. it's not the politicians- it's we who have willed this and the politicians know it.

ONE question...direct answer expected.

"are OBCs not capable enough to enter IIT/IIM/AIIMS through their own capability?"
(hopefully no upper caste people..rather the elites stop them from even sitting for the entrance exam??)

At 3:09 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

see its simple..
till the level of sitting and giving the entrance exam they dont need reservations(for grad n post grad courses),and for making the OBCs or STs or SCs capable for being able to qualify for the course, the effort is something that goes much deep down level-from the elementary level to the preparation for entrance...right?
Even after so much,if the OBC student is not able to qualify,he is simply incapable of getting into the professional college.Just like those 799 upper class students per seat who want to get in iit.
THen what makes OBCs diffrent from these 799??JUst because they lower classes they should be admitted without merit and talent?how is that justice?
What is the sole reason for your stress on reservations and not improving the overall quality of education for our OBC citizens?
IF the education till 12th has loopholes the direct impact is that a student doesnt get the training required to become a part of an engineering or medical college...so such a person deserves not a single seat.SUch a child may belong to a poor upper class family also, but whatever may have been the reason he still doesnt become deserving of a seat for which his fellow students fight 800 aspirants per seat...in such a situation he is given reservation means we are compromising on quality. This has a direct impact on the development of the country.
Just becoz this child is an OBC,wont make him deserving more than an upper caste student with the same situation. That is why this whole concept of reservations is unfair.

manee,
'"are OBCs not capable enough to enter IIT/IIM/AIIMS through their own capability?"
what kind of question is that? and you expect a direct answer to that?
it's like asking 'are all africans capable of running 100m in 11 seconds?'
i'll attempt to answer that anyway:
their past performance shows that with the current selection process not many obcs are capable of entering the IIT/IIM/aiims on their own so-called capability.

as for your comment i find it a simple rehash of your earlier tirade without much substance..

you ask:'What is the sole reason for your stress on reservations and not improving the overall quality of education for our OBC citizens?'

is that how you understood my posts? looks like you haven't read any of them.. but came running here to spew meaningless venom on us..just because it says 'obcvoice'.
ms..it's you and your partners here who seem stressed out on the question of reservations..not me..i'm more worried about the obcs getting their rights.

whatever the caste politics that was and is a part of indian polity and the indian job scene : i am saying, that i have a conscience to answer to, which doesnt let me enjoy this aparthied in the way of reservation to me. I am not a party to this.
and who made u the crusader for obc's.... while replying to me, u went 'we we we'.. who we? u r not a representive of the entire OBC community. and dont spread the farce of being so.
about those kids i spoke of.. they arent victimised because they are OBC's.. they are victimised b'coz they are poor. period. politicians and babus dont go around watching out for castes while sucking blood of poors. they have only one religion - money. to stand up against them, we need to stand united. and here u are, all over deviding the nation.
If their is a reservation afterall.. i think, the merit shouldnt be lowered. let the reserved seats remain vacant if there arent enough of qualified participants.

This bloody mindset, is the only reason that India's dream of being a superpower remains just that: a dream.
thanx to these reservations we have developed an attitude of 'chalta hai'.
while a dalit student may be intelligent, he will not study, because he needs not do so, to get where he wants to get the admission.

All that this farce is doing is, giving anoter excuse to be inept.

I have read the comment of INDIANSCHOOLSTUDENTS on your latest post which shows the numbers and other data.
Reading that, its so very clear, that reservations are hardly going to help in the present scenario,we need something more practical.

YOU:it's like asking 'are all africans capable of running 100m in 11 seconds?'
hmm...if the africans are not capable of this, the they dont deserve to win or even participate in this 11second-100m race.OBviously we cant reserve 1st and second positions for those who were left behind in the race?WE rather would make sure next time they practice harder and try their level best to make it to the 1st position.
by the way,im surprised you gave the instance of a race, hope you know it requires pure healthy competition irrespective of caste.
or are you planning to demand reservations for OBCs in such sport competitions also?Your example is a bit irrelevant to justify your statement as it rather althemore strngthens mine...coz here i ask you your very own question "are all africans capable of running 100m in 11 seconds?"

YOU:is that how you understood my posts? looks like you haven't read any of them.. but came running here to spew meaningless venom on us..just because it says 'obcvoice'

Had i not read all your posts i wouldnt have posed the question at the first place.Your intentions are definitely for the welfare of the OBCs but its so downright preposterous to pull down the talented and the already capable,in oreder to make the OBCs capable. Our competition is not between lower and upper castes but its on an international basis...our INdian doctors engineers etc have the competition with the world doctors and at such a crucial turn in the development we are heading for a step backward?
You say:" but came running here to spew meaningless venom on us..just because it says 'obcvoice'"
you talk of venom?
is that how you understood my posts,my comments my sentimentality...and me? looks like you haven't read any of me..or your narrow mindedness is utterly incapable of comprehending my gentle and open outlook towards life...towards my fellow Indians...(OBCs).
And about venom i would say,if your demand for 27% reservations gets implemented, you will really know what venom is...less patient people will begin to make fun of the OBCs,they will completely lose their respect in the society becoz they have tresspassed on someone else's rights. An OBC student will be looked down upon for his quota, they will be mocked at...A life of educational prosperity but social misery is what follows the venomous snake of reservations for the OBCs.

finally,

YOU:ms..it's you and your partners here who seem stressed out on the question of reservations..not me..

yeah..i am really stressed out.stressed out to see the lathi charges on the peacefully protesting medical students, stressed out to see them on hunger strike for a week now...stressed out to see the future of my India dismal...stressed out to see that OBCs need crutches of reservations to get into a professional college...they need reservations for post graduations...and then for jobs...stressed out as now there will be brain drain and brightest of the minds will leave the country...yeah im really stressed out.

BUt its surprising as well as poignant to see you arent.NOw i understand why my comments are 'WITHOUT SUBSTANCE' for you...

EMOTIONS are without substance for you.
